Hexacage sets a new standard for closed aquaculture
Hexacage’s closed sea-based units eliminate issues such as sea lice and escapes, while optimal water flow and velocity throughout the system ensure the highest possible level of fish welfare — with minimal energy consumption.
The solution offers control and biological advantages comparable to those of modern land-based facilities — but with lower investment costs, lower operating costs, and no environmental disruption.
The scalable system is delivered in configurations ranging from simple modules to complete facilities with up to six units. With just three modules, it's possible to produce up to 7,500 tons of post-smolt annually — on an area of only 100 x 100 meters.This represents a level of space efficiency that revolutionizes site utilization.
Hexacage has been developed in close collaboration with leading fish health biologists and aquaculture professionals, and is owned by the industrial group Westcon Group. Westcon brings decades of experience in demanding offshore operations and has built and maintained ships and various maritime steel structures for over 50 years. In addition, Westcon has 12 years of experience in the construction and operation of closed-containment sea facilities, as a former major shareholder in an international aquaculture company.
Hexacage is designed and built in accordance with DNV standards for marine structures, and complies with the Norwegian Maritime Authority’s requirements for barges, as well as NS9415:2021 and NYTEK23. The construction features extensive redundancy in all critical components, ensuring a long lifespan and safe operations for up to 50 years.
