During a company visit to Westcon Yards Karmsund, Haugaland Fire and Rescue gained valuable insight into collaboration, HSE, and emergency preparedness aboard the EDDA FAUNA, which is currently in dry dock.
On Wednesday, April 16th, Haugaland Fire and Rescue visited Westcon Yards Karmsund for a professional company visit focusing on collaboration, safety, and emergency preparedness. The delegation was invited aboard the 109-meter-long EDDA FAUNA, which is currently in dry dock for maintenance.
When a vessel is in dry dock, extensive work, both hot and cold, often takes place in confined and complex environments. Should an undesirable incident occur, high demands are placed on HSE, coordination, and rapid response. The purpose of the visit was therefore to provide the fire department with better insight into the ship's structure and working conditions on board, ensuring they are as well-prepared as possible for any potential operation.
For personnel who do not regularly work aboard larger vessels, it can be challenging to navigate, especially when heavy rescue and firefighting equipment needs to be brought into the ship. Knowing escape routes, compartment layouts, and risk areas is crucial for a safe and effective operation.
The fire department has overall responsibility should an incident occur on ships docked at the quay. Together with well-trained maritime personnel, the goal is always to be as well-prepared as possible for any situation, with the safety of crew, rescue personnel, and the shipyard as the highest priority.
The Chief Officer of EDDA FAUNA gave the delegation a thorough tour, which included the area beneath the vessel, engine room, ROV hangar, battery room, galley, helideck, and bridge. Along the way, participants also gained insight into the ship's equipment and systems for fire protection and rescue.
The delegation consisted of full-time and part-time firefighters, as well as students from the municipalities in Haugalandet. Such meetings and visits are important contributions to increased understanding, improved cooperation, and strengthened emergency preparedness across various stakeholders.
